Bright, eye-catching silver plate earrings with apple-green magnesite.
Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate within the calcite group (calcium carbonate). It can form when magnesium rich rocks like serpentine are exposed to carbon dioxide-rich solution, or when carbonate rocks are exposed to magnesium-rich solution. Magnesite typically appears as white within a grey matrix (the veins running through the rock) and is very similar in appearance to howlite. It’s quite porous, which combined with the light, flat colour, lets it take dye very well. It’s frequently dyed blue and used as imitation turquoise.
I love the visually striking contrast of rough nugget forms of magnesite dyed bright, candy-like colours, as with the apple-green magnesite here.
